Philip M. Saunders, Associate professor and director of Marine and Environmental Law Institute, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University. Dean of Law, 2005-2010. Teaching and research interest in international marine and environmental law, maritime boundary delimitation, tort law, judicial remedies and international fisheries law. Professor Saunders was formerly with the International Center for Ocean Development, as Senior Policy Advisor and as Field Representative, South Pacific, delivering ocean-related development programs in the South Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Ocean. He has advised states on matters of international law and law of the sea in the South Pacific, the Caribbean , the Indian Ocean, Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central America and Russia, including the negotiation of maritime boundary agreements and the drafting of marine and oil and gas legislation. He acted as counsel for Nova Scotia in the arbitration of the boundary between the offshore areas of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, has advised the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs on maritime boundary and related matters, and served as a Commissioner for the panel reviewing the Deep Panuke offshore project. He is an author and co-general editor of Kindred’s International Law Chiefly as Interpreted and Applied in Canada (9th ed., 2019).
